Assault and Battery
Battery is the intentional touching of, or application of force to, the body of another person in a harmful or offensive manner (and without consent). A battery is often confused with an assault, which is merely the act of threatening or placing fear in another. An assault is usually followed by battery, but not always. Battery can be committed without an assault and vice versa.
Sexual Assault
According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)–there is an average of 293,066 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year (Rape Abuse & Incest National Network). Sexual assault and abuse is any type of sexual activity that you do not agree to such as inappropriate touching, rape, attempted rape, etc. Sexual assault can be verbal, visual, or anything that forces a person to join in unwanted sexual contact or attention.
