Drive safely on Kentucky roads this holiday weekend

For some Louisville residents, Memorial Day weekend will include taking a trip. Whether you plan to travel across town or across the country, being on the road during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year increases your chances of being involved in an accident.

Here in Kentucky, the state police have been participating in the national seat belt campaign "Click It or Ticket" since May 20. The campaign, which runs through June 2, puts extra patrols out on the roads to make sure that drivers and their passengers buckle up.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that two years ago,10,076 occupants of passenger vehicles who died in U.S. collisions were not wearing seat belts. The agency also determined that 55% died in wrecks that occurred from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., making the overnight hours the most dangerous time to drive unbelted.

The spokesperson for Kentucky State Police Post 2 stated, "Wearing a seat belt is very important due to other drivers being inattentive or on cell phones."

The police will also be targeting motorists they suspect of impairment. People often overindulge in alcohol over holiday weekends. If they get behind the wheel after drinking, the results can be catastrophic.

To avoid collisions, troopers are asking drivers to reduce their speeds and to pull to the side of the road when emergency vehicles are behind them.

No matter where your Memorial Day weekend travels take you, be smart and stay safer. Should you get injured in an accident caused by another driver's error, you will need to act swiftly to preserve your right to seek compensation for these damages and losses.
