A Louisville physician has been "indefinitely suspended" from practicing hormone medicine by the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure. 25 Again's medical director, Dr. Elizabeth Veeneman Bates, will retain her license to practice medicine and the clinic will not be shuttered.
However, Dr. Bates' attorney stated the physician was disappointed by the board's ruling and planned an appeal. The indefinite restriction will remain in effect until the doctor successfully completes a costly re-education program with no guarantee she won't face another suspension.
The board takes a hard stance against hormone optimization therapy, which they allege violates prevailing acceptable medical standards.
The president of the company that owns the parent company for 25 Again, Body Shapes Medical Management, stated the company "remains committed to providing members with the medically-valid and proven treatment options they know to be effective in improving their health and vitality."
One patient of the doctor referred to the Board's ruling as a "travesty." While no other physicians are the subject of similar orders at this time, the ruling could have a chilling effect on doctors' willingness to treat their patients with these hormones.
As reported by the Courier Journal, Bates prescribed both testosterone and thyroid hormones to patients whose levels were already within normal limits.
According to board counsel, these practices are neither taught to physicians in medical school nor do guidelines exist.
Were you victimized by a physician who was improperly prescribing medication for unapproved conditions? If so, and if you subsequently suffered injuries or damages, you may be able to seek legal redress through the Kentucky civil court system.
