What are the top 3 reasons for car accidents?

Car accidents sometimes feel random and chaotic, but the reality is that they all happen for a reason. Most of the time, these reasons are very easy to avoid and they just come back to driver error. Even when they have years of experience, people just are not safe drivers, and thousands of lives are lost every year as a result.

So, what are the top three reasons for these wrecks? They are:

  1. Distracted driving. The dangers of distraction can't be overstated. For instance, if you text and drive, you're 23 times as likely to crash your car. But distractions go far beyond texting, and they also include things like eating, drinking, talking to passengers, talking on the phone, changing the radio station, using the GPS and applying makeup behind the wheel.
  2. Speeding. If you feel like it's all right to break the speed limit when you're in a rush, you have to understand the risk. All for the sake of trying to save a few minutes on a trip, the U.S. Department of Transportation says that speeding causes about 33 percent of all accidents -- or, at least, contributes to those wrecks. It also increases the odds that the crash will be deadly.
  3. Drunk driving. Millions of arrests are made for drunk driving. Campaigns teach about the dangers. State laws make it very clear that impaired driving is illegal. And yet people continue to do it, causing an incredible amount of injuries and deaths.

Remember: Accidents are not random. They have root causes. When someone else injures you in a crash, it may be time to look into all of your legal options to seek financial compensation.
