Blow dryer becomes blow torch, burning woman's hand

Amazon sells almost anything a consumer might need on their website. But for one woman in another state, her online purchase of a hair dryer could have led to lethal consequences.

The woman bought an OraCorp blow dryer on the Amazon website. After it arrived, she attempted to use it for it's stated purpose — blow-drying her hair. But something went horribly wrong.

In a video shared on social media, flames can clearly be seen shooting out of the blow-dryer, making it resemble a blow-torch instead. She was burned on one hand and her bathroom filled with the odor from the burning hair appliance. She commented, "Talk about a bad hair day! My new hair dryer (more like hair frier) from OraCorp on Amazon.com became a blow torch on its first use."

Amazon refunded the woman's purchase price and removed the blow dryers from its website.

It's unknown whether this will spark a recall of the defective products. Often, it's an incident like this one involving a consumer that causes governmental agencies tasked with overseeing the safety of products on the marketplace to act.

Sometimes it is the companies themselves, fearing consumer backlash and liabilities, that issue voluntary recalls. This allows them to recover their products before consumers are ever injured. Then, manufacturers can address the design flaws and fix any safety hazards. While this can be an expensive undertaking, it is far cheaper than paying millions in settlements for injuries that occurred due to known hazards.

A product doesn't have to be part of a recall for you to pursue litigation against the manufacturer for injuries you suffered while using it for its intended purposes, however. Learn all that you can about product liability if you choose to seek compensation.
