Fisher-Price issues voluntary recall of baby seats

Parents of infants know how difficult it can be to accomplish even the most basic things while their babies are awake. That's why so many parents have come to rely on infant seats that can safely contain their fussy babies so mom and dad can do everyday tasks like fixing supper or taking a shower.

But are those infant seats really safe? At least one vibrating infant seat has proven to have serious design flaws that could severely harm a baby.

Back in October of 2017, the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Fisher-Price issued a voluntary recall of 63,000 of its Soothing Motion Seats under the Commission's Fast Track Recall process. This type of recall is proactively initiated by companies committed to cooperating with the CPSC to recall unsafe products and provide remedies to consumers.

Four of the Fisher-Price models, which were manufactured in China, have been recalled:

  • DYH22
  • CMR35
  • CMR39
  • CMR37

The reason for the recall is that the motor that enables the seats to vibrate may overheat. As of the time of the recall, there had been 36 reported malfunctions, with one unit catching on fire within the housing of the motor. No babies were injured as a result.

The seats were first sold to consumers back in November 2015 via Amazon, at Toys 'R Us, Target and Walmart. The company is issuing full refunds to consumers who purchased the seats or received them as gifts. To learn more, consumers are urged to call Fisher Price at (800) 432-5437.

Consumers should be able to feel confident that the products they purchase are safe to use for their intended purposes. If you (or your children) have been injured because of a defective or unsafe product, you have the right to pursue legal action.
