How to recognize a staged collision

You're an honest person, and that's why you cannot conceive of unscrupulous people actually staging car accidents to collect insurance benefits fraudulently. Yet those type of "accidents" happen all too frequently in Kentucky and elsewhere around the United States.

How can you tell if an accident is staged?

It's not always easy, which is why they get away with it regularly. But there are some things motorists can look out for. They include the following:

  • T-bone collisions - You're tooling through an intersection when a car suddenly guns its motor and slams into your driver's side or passenger doors. Then suddenly when police arrive, "witnesses" come out of the woodwork to announce that you were the at-fault driver who blew through the light.
  • Slamming on the brakes - All of a sudden, for no apparent reason, the driver ahead of you slams on the brakes. Boom!
  • The wave - As you sit in your lane waiting for a break in traffic to merge, another driver gestures for you to proceed. Naturally, you are shocked one he accelerates into your car, then denies that he ever waved you on.
  • Sideswiping - A popular ruse in dual turning lanes, the driver edges over into your lane, causing a collision. Venal witnesses corroborate the lie that it was your fault.
  • Swoop and stop - This variation of the slammed brakes involves two vehicles — the one that stops suddenly in front of you and another that appears beside you to box you in and block an escape route.

If you were the victim of a staged car wreck, you need to report it to the police and your insurance company immediately.
