Will you be hit by the uninsured driver?

If you're in a car accident where the other person was at fault, you would expect that person's insurance to pay the costs of your medical treatment and other damages. But that's not what happens when the other driver is uninsured.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, in 2012, the last year for which there is data, 15.8 percent of Kentucky's drivers were uninsured. That means that for every 10 drivers on the road, between one and two were uninsured. What happens if you get hit by an uninsured driver? If that happens, paying for the ambulance ride, surgeries, lost wages-that all becomes your problem--unless you have purchased additional uninsured motorist (UM) coverage for your car insurance policy.

Uninsured motorist coverage is not required in Kentucky. But if you want to avoid the above scenario playing out in your life, UM coverage is essential. Uninsured motorist insurance pays for medical and other costs associated with an accident when the driver who hit you was uninsured. It also pays for your costs incurred in a hit-and-run accident, when the driver speeds away and there's no way to know who they were or, if their insurance-- if they had it--would have covered you.

Uninsured motorist (UIM) coverage is also available, and pays your costs when the driver who hit you had insurance, but not enough to cover your expenses from the accident.

Whatever the circumstances of your accident, it helps to have an experienced personal injury attorney on your side who can help you navigate the challenges you will face securing compensation for your injuries.
